Described by Paul Pacult, the renowned international whisky writer, in his book Kindred Spirits as: "simply the best 12 Year Old single malt around", The Macallan has justly reaped such critical acclaim. The secret of The Macallan lies in defiant adherence to traditional methods and ingredients. The continued use of finest Golden Promise barley and the insistence on the finest oak casks are just two of the pre-requisites for perfection.

If we are comparing the popular 12 year old's, then this is hands down the best. Costs $45-$50, and worth every penny. When introducing scotch to newbies, this is the one I start with - unfortunately, most non connoisseurs think scotch is what they find with the blended well drinks at the local bar. Once you taste The Macallan 12 year old, you'll start a curiosity and appreciation with Scotch. Someone mentioned in their post - the way I judge other 12 year old scotch is by asking, "is this better than the Macallan". I have not found one just yet. I'm open to suggestions if others have.

    Medium bodied, smooth.
    Palate
Honey, lightly fruity, caramel and smooth. Hint of peat.
    Finish
Medium length finish, strong at first but puttering out near the end. Warm, hint of spice.

An exceptional scotch for the price.

    Welcome to the Dark Side
    Nose
Blossoms of spring with a heavy Sherry influence
    Body
    Medium body but smooth
    Palate
Oaked & a little sweet, but pleasantly fruity
    Finish
Smooth and warm with a lingering aftertaste that invites another taste

I'm giving this a 90 mainly because it tastes much better than most other 12 year olds. Normally I don't care for the sweet drinks, but this had a way of growing on me.

I'm not very well versed on color but a nice golden color to
    Nose
Fresh fruity smell. Very pleasant smell.
    Body
Smooth not heavy. Light in the mouth
    Palate
    Fruit salad. Fresh air.
    Finish
Not overly strong. Short spice. Nice spicy tingle on the lips. Not like an alcohol bite but more a spicy fruit if there were such a thing

New to single malts but this was very enjoyable. A little spicy but not overwhelming. A fresh after taste and light in the mouth. I'm no seasoned pro but I would definitely purchase again. A little sweet, very easy to drink. Almost like a strong wine. I voted the average number bc I have not had many single malts. Def would recommend to someone wanting to try scotch the way it's supposed to be. Great pair with a light body or after dinner cigar.

When compared with other 12 years, The Macallan makes for a great drink. It is well worth every penny and doesn't fail to excite the palate.

new at this review bit - so most of my wording for awhile will be rather tentative - but onward - at my wife's yearly get together, I tried The Macallan 12 year old, straight up at room temperatue. For my taste it was rather bland or unexciting although not medicinal. The bar man gave me a good three fingers and I sipped on it for an hour or so. Smooth enough that I had a small delight in drinking it but will not waste my money buying a bottle. (I tend to like peaty and what I think of as explosive openings so you may find the quiet of The Macallan to your liking)

Noses of malt and cream sherry
    Body

    Palate
A bit heavy on the sherry over the grain, though the grain did reach semi-equal ground upon subsequent pulls
    Finish
Somewhat disappointing finish, but one detects sherry, cream, and grain

A nice dram but a bit off balance and short on finish, and you may find yourself inexplicably searching for the grain in this classic Speysider; I found that I much prefer the 10 year

    Nose
Lots of sherry as expected. Also there is hints of dark honey. Dried fruits come to mind: orange, bananas. Some cinnamon also present.
    Body
I'd say medium bodied, which surprised me. I thought it'd be bigger.
    Palate
What I had expected from the nose. Very sweet overall. The dried fruits are still there. But it's sherry that dominates along with the almonds. Dark honey is present and there is a touch of cinnamon.
    Finish
Very unexpected finish. It builds up with time from a sherry taste and ends up with a bittersweet taste making me think of dark chocolate.

Ok don't know what happened but a review I did for the Bowmore ended up here. So this is the good review.

Not bad. I like a little more rough edges and a more agressive flavor, but for those who are looking for a mild mannered smooth whisky, this is perfect.

    Body
    Oily, piercing
    Palate
Unpleasant. Sherry overpowers everything. Not balanced.
    Finish
    Lingering sherry, a little sting.

I found this to be highly overrated. Most flavors are meek, and the strong sherry just ruins it for me. I don't like it when my whiskey tastes like wine.

    Color
    Deep dark copper.
    Nose
    Rich, dry, sherry wine.
    Body
Medium-light bodied - not overly gripping on the tongue, if even the legs betray this.
    Palate
Candied roses dipped in thick wine, then baked with a topping of white pepper flakes and served on dark rock sugar.
    Finish
Short and lacks a lot of depth, but the peppery dry warmth (especially with a dash of water) invites sip after delicious sip.

Definitely a dessert scotch, this is a can't-miss introduction to all your friends who drink wine. Dry, sweet, and inviting, try this one with some dark and/or orange chocolate to discover a world of Speyside sherry bliss.

One of the best i've had. Goes down extremely smooth, lacks the long finish, however, very cooling, and rarely hot. Well worth the price of $90/bottle. Floral and fruity are the definitive characteristics of this whisky.
