The Glenlivet distillery stands on the lonely hillside where George Smith founded it almost 200 years ago. Near the River Livet, Josie's Well still pours forth its uniquely pure mineral rich water to feed the mash tun. As it did in 1824. At this height (850 feet above the sea) the stills are run at a gentle heat, yielding a delicate fragrant spirit unique even in Speyside, the famous heartlad of malt whisky excellence. Only so grand a place could produce so fine a whisky. Aged only in oak casks.

    Color
    Medium amber
    Nose
Slight "peaty" aroma, but not overwhelming; for those not accustomed to single malts, the nose will be somewhat heavier than blends.
    Body
Noticeably fuller body than blended Scotch, but smoother.
    Palate
The peat cannot be ignored, but neither is it overwhelming...slightly sweet, and a subtle burn, like a deep, smoldering fire.
    Finish
Nice finish, but not too long - enough to entice another sip...and another.

Arguably the best Scotch to begin enjoying single malts.

    Color
    Light golden amber.
    Nose
Fresh apples and pears, light cinnamon spice, citrus floral notes and lightly toasted almonds. A quite sublime nose with a lovely fresh oak edge giving it a scent not unlike a good Bourbon.
    Body
    Light to medium bodied.
    Palate
Fresh fruit and lightly toasted almonds. A clear Marzipan edge with a great warmth. For it's age it has a good degree of complexity.
    Finish
Great length to the finish but not too long. Marzipan and fruits linger after the mild spice recedes.

Much like Glenfiddich 12 this is outstanding value (I paid £16.80 for a 700ml bottle!!) and an incredibly well crafted single malt. For me this is so close in style to the (very expensive) 18 year old expression that it's an easy buy. The perfect everyday dram, this would be what I'd recommend to anyone starting out in the wonderful world of whisky. Great stuff indeed.

    Nose

    Body
medium -- but not the psychic kind!
    Palate
Rose, plum, currant, light peach, a tad of smoke
    Finish
A little square -- not "the dope" -- not Sly Stone -- more like Lenny Kravitz but hey, not too bad

I'm one of those who finds I often prefer a wonderful 12 year old to an overrated merely adequate 18! (Note to NSA: referring strictly to whisky here!) The Glenlivet 12 may not be wonderful ,however, but it's not half-bad for day to day imbibing ... There are better whiskies out there, yes -- but I'm getting downardly mobile just fantasizing about them & their costs, so ... The Glenlivet will do in a pinch now & again I find ...

Short, sweet and smooth. Apples and cinnamon. Not particularly complex.

In my previous review (below), I was a bit hard on this whisky. At the time, I didn't understand about oxidation, and bottles that have been open too long in restaurants. The bitterness I described is no doubt, oxidation. I had a glass today, and it was wonderful. Its not complicated and it is too weak, but a lovely apple ad pie crust whisky. I rated it 82 3 years ago. Tonight its at 84. Decent 12 year. Nothing remarkable. A bit harsh in the finish, but otherwise very palatable. I'll drink this at restaurants, but I won't be buying it. At 40% ABV, it's too weak to water. I took it neat in a snifter. Added a bit of water as I got through it. For the money, get the Glenfiddich.

Drinkable with ice, soda or lemonade. Do not try this on a Glencairn glass. Overall medicinal with flower extract in the background.

Not much here either. Goes away fast.

When I try spirits like these after the initial anger and disappointment I realize how misleading and insignificant an age statement can be. Glenlivet, after 12 years of maturation are you sure you can't do any better than this? For less money both Black Bottle and Chivas 12 blends blow this this Glen away. Nice bottle and tube though.

    Palate
Even more flowery than it smells, slightly smoky, some fruits, many different flavors I can't properly distinguish yet.
    Finish
Smooth and long enough to enjoy the many different flavors.

Elegant is a word that comes to mind with this one. Quite smooth, with a warm and full, flowery taste. Maybe my favorite among the whiskeys that got me into liking single malts. Great for starters, at least.

The venerable Speysider still has purpose, though doubtless luster has been lost to the proliferation of other Scottish Malts in the past two decades. With its former vitality up for debate, it’s nonetheless significant and certainly solid. Sales are steady, but can it return to greatness?

It won't wow you, but this is a solid whisky. A great one to start off with if you're new to single malts. A very good after-dinner and springtime scotch, and certainly a good one to share with friends or family. Very pleasant and refreshing right from the nose through the finish.

Floral, gentle maltiness. Dry not sweet malt. Mild spice.
    Body
Firm, more weight than it might seem.
    Palate
This seems a bit more "intense" than other years of this malt, or again, perhaps it is my changing palate. There is a spiciness here that gives some additional balance to the normal gentle floral quality. It seems more assertive and direct as well.
    Finish
Finishes as well as it starts.

Do not overlook; a slightly better than average malt.
