The Balvenie Doublewood Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a 12 year old single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two woods. During its period of maturation The Balvenie Doublewood is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill Spanish oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt - the traditional casks, having previously held bourbon, soften and add character, whilst the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour.

    Color
    Goldish copperyish amberish.
    Nose
the nose didn't have much to offer, even after a drop or two of water. there was a faint hint of maple and honey - which lead to the correct guess that this was going to be a sweet one.
    Body
Smooth as they go - didn't feel this one in the mouth (that's what she said?).
    Palate
Very, very sweet. Oaky flavour with hints of vanilla and apple. This wasn't exactly a robust flavor, but it was still pretty pleasant.
    Finish
    Almost no finish.

Oh my. I'm not sure if it's the aging in ex-bourbon barrels that add even more sweetness to the sherry barrels, but this was the sweetest dram I've tasted yet, even for a Speyside.

    Color
    Honey amber in the glass.
    Nose
Sweet maple honey and a hint of spiciness.
    Body
    Light to medium bodied.
    Palate
Rather too sweet overall with a mixture of apple, honey and caramel. Not a massively complex flavour but still pleasant enough. No need for water.
    Finish
This otherwise decent dram's main flaw, a distinct lack of complexity of finish.

This was the first single malt I purchased and having been initially impressed my now, more trained palate has seen it in a slightly less favourable way. It's still a fine whiskey but Eye-Lah-Guy's appraisal of its weak finish is spot on. If it only had a little more depth and complexity.

I've been comparing 12 year old Balvenie to 12 year old Glenlivet. They are both good. I feel very fortunate to be able to try them both along with other single malts. I am happy when I can have any of them, none of them are at all bad in my judgment.

    Nose
    Sweet apple, oak, cocoa
    Body
    Smooth - evaporates quickly
    Palate
Sweet apple with a touch of honey, spicy cinnamon, and a sharp burn.
    Finish
Long, slow finish. Taste dissipates leaving a loving warmth and insinuation of vanilla.

My very first truly appreciated bottle of scotch. Excellent for a beginner, this dram has opened a new world for an old craft beer hand.

    Palate
Easy to drink for a first timer, what those sickly sweet bourbons are trying to be and fail so miserably. Warning do not add ice or water or this whisky dissapears into oblivion. Sweet but not sugary very clean taste Oak and sherry flavours make it delicious for anyone except maybe a veteran scotch connoisseur who is probably after something more complex, this is a crowd pleaser. You could have this for breakfast and enjoy it.
    Finish
Non-existent, the only downfall of this dram. Spring or summer dram.

Great for begginers, or the mass market

Starts sweet and gives way to dry walnuts. Sherry begins to appear.
    Finish
Fairly short and warm. Sweets linger for a bit.

Bourbon-like. The American oak is much more influential than the sherry casks in this dram. A satisfying scotch though not too complex.

    Dark gold, nearly copper.
    Nose
Sweet, Nutty (toasted almonds), light on the peat / smoke. Notes of vanilla, maple, apple, & cinnamon. A touch too much booze.
    Body
    Medium bodied.
    Palate
Maple syrup, reminiscent of, but not too close to, bourbon dominates. Strong notes of honey & nut support, as if one lightly drizzled pancake syrup over baklava. The nose on exhalation is dominated by dry bakers chocolate.
    Finish
    Medium-short, but still quite spicy.

One of my favorite 12 years, a good deal better than The Balvenie 14 year. May be a bit too bourbon-y for the average scotch drinker, but as a native Kentuckian, I don't mind a bit. Too much alcohol on the nose and too short a finish for a "Great" score, but overall, a very good after dinner drink, and solid value for money at ~$50.

    Color
Vivid gold, almost as though you were shining a light through the back of a darker bottle
    Nose
Very sweet and sugary, almost like cookie dough.
    Body
Medium-bodied. Thick enough to warrant rolling the sip around for a while, but still thin enough where you can down a glass quick if you need to.
    Palate
Very sweet up front, but the sweetness fades quickly. After the sweetness fades, there is nothing noteworthy. No obvious flavor influences....just basic sweetness.
    Finish
Easy finish, doesn't linger as long as most whiskies I've tried. As with my comment on the body, it makes it easier to down a glass if you're in a hurry.

Balvenie DW was somewhat of a let-down for me. I had been looking for a good sweet Speysider for a while, and read several reviews saying DW was just that. It is definitely one of the sweeter whiskies I've tried, but not in a distinctive way -- more of a generic, sugared-whisky way. It's definitely worth drinking, and I wouldn't return a gifted bottle, but it's not something I'd go out of my way to have again.

Honey and vanilla predominate on an even bed of maltiness and side of fruit. If you get curious and patient (give it 15 minutes in your glass) it will open up some flowery perfume, a whiff of sherry, smoke, and peat.
    Body
To the heavy side of medium.
    Palate
Integrates well with the nose, that is mostly honey and malt, but without any syrupiness.
    Finish
Fairly long and rather acidic, here the vaunted sherry makes itself finally a salient addition with a lingering spice - one that will stay in your mouth for upwards of an hour.

This is a well constructed rather straightforward Speyside whisky. If you are looking for a well sherried whisky, look elsewhere. Yet for a shoulder season malt - late spring or late summer - this is a fine bottle to savour.

Strong notes of vanilla and oak greet the palate at first, with subtler grassy, fruity, floral flavors revealing themselves as the whisky rolls around the mouth.
    Finish
A long finish with flavors of oak and walnuts. Warming and earthy, with a very faint medicinal note to it.

Incredible. This is a highly enjoyable dram. In my opinion, it needs a touch of water to open it up, but with just a touch, it truly shines. The Doublewood never overwhelms, but delights the palate with its array of flavors. Highly recommended.

    Palate
woody, flowers. hint of almond nuts. hint of liquorice.
    Finish
    Long finish, balanced.

This one needs water, once added you have a pleasant toffee scent, honey and fruits. A slight liquorice taste. Quite sweet, well balanced. This one is fantastic, and felt better than the 21 year old Portwood. I'm very impressed with this whisky, it's one of the best!

Oak, vanilla and caramel. Orange peel, orange marmalade. A hint of raspberry syrup.
    Body
Medium body, expands in the mouth, turns watery.
    Palate
Sweet sour. Vanilla, lots of toffee. Lavender. Plenty of sherry notes.
    Finish
Medium finish. Caramel covered peanuts. Sherry notes laced with burnt sugar.

Spring garden, fruiting orchard - wrong time of the year to drink this! Definitely an early summer / late spring dram. Very nice indeed.

    Nose
Some sherry and citrus - typical of Balvenie house style. Very slight hint of smoke.
    Body
    Good balance. Moderately full bodied.
    Palate
Somewhat complex when allowed to stand in the glass for a while. Smoke disappears to sherry, citrus, a bit of peat.
    Finish
    Slight burn.

This is one of the better values in the Balvenie stable. Not my favorite of the bunch, but a repeat because of the price.

    Color
    Burnt umber
    Nose
Lots of oak, Peat, Slight vanilla, Spice, Candied ginger.
    Body
    Flavourful, Hot, Medium body.
    Palate
Mellow peat, Pepper, Candied apple, Oak, Spice.
    Finish
Long and slow. Lots of development. Flavours fade and pepper grows.

I was at first less impressed by this whisky, but upon second tasting, I'm finding new things. It has a delicious fruit character. The sherry is really ringing through. It's like a candied apple. Slightly too tarte, but that's really nit picking. Delicious.
