To create The Balvenie Portwood 21 Year Old, rare 21 Year Old Balvenie - which has been matured in traditional oak casks - is transferred to a port cask, or pipe, which has held fine port wines. Here it is sampled every month by The Balvenie Malt Master to ensure that just the right amount of character is imparted by the port casks, enhancing and developing the single malt, whilst preserving its original characteristics.

The Balvenie Single Barrel Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a 15 year old single malt which is drawn from a single bourbon cask of a single distillation. Each cask forms a limited edition of hand-numbered bottles - there will be a maximum of 350 bottles from any one cask - so each bottle is unique and unrepeatable. Each cask is subtly different, however, The Balvenie Malt Master selects for bottling only those casks that have the essential characteristics of The Balvenie Single Barrel - particularly honey, vanilla and oaky notes.

The Balvenie Doublewood Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a 12 year old single malt which gains its distinctive character from being matured in two woods. During its period of maturation The Balvenie Doublewood is transferred from a traditional oak whisky cask to a first fill Spanish oak sherry cask. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt - the traditional casks, having previously held bourbon, soften and add character, whilst the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour.

The Balvenie Founders Reserve results from a marriage of The Balvenie Single Malt matured in bourbon casks with that matured in sherry casks or butts.

A marriage of Balvenie from Bourbon wood and Balvenie from Sherry wood vatted together in New American Oak. The result is a characteristically well-matured Balvenie.

Following the success of the limited edition PortWood® 1989, David Stewart The Balvenie Malt Master selected a number of traditional whisky casks of The Balvenie distilled in nineteen ninety one that were considered perfect for further maturation in Port Pipes. This has created a Single Malt Scotch Whisky that is rich and fruity and long in the finish. The Balvenie Portwood 1991 is a limited edition, available in selected retail outlets and in our online shop.
