- Color
- Golden amber, e150 probably.
- Nose
- Lovely smoke, like a just doused campfire. Phenols, seawater, vanilla, black pepper, white pepper.
- Body
- Medium-full, Viscous, Lightly syrupy.
- Palate
- Peat smoke, Seawater, Phenols, Vanilla, a touch of Green apple.
- Finish
- Ridiculously long, peppery, numbing due to the phenols. Smoke and salt hang around forever.
I really didn't like the Ardbeg 10, but this is so much more balanced. There's a ton of peat characteristics you would expect form an Islay, but it's so much more complex than the other offerings I've had from the island. There's a real development from nose to palate to finish. I'm mostly into Highland and Speyside malts, but this is so good it may actually be my new favorite. Highly recommended.
Glenmorangie 15 Years Old Sauternes Wood Finish Jan 17th 2012

- Color
- Golden honey, a shade or two darker than the 10 year
- Nose
- Light, slightly sweet, not at all boozy. Very light notes of dried apricots, caramel, & honey, not much else.
- Body
- Thick & syrupy. If it were a wine I'd say "leggy".
- Palate
- Again light, sweet, surprisingly boozy compared to the nose. Light notes of honey, lemon, & toffee, stronger notes of caramel & green apple.
- Finish
- Subtle but lingering, peppery, strong on the caramel, which is the last thing to fade.
Weak on the nose, a bit boozy in the mouth, but otherwise a very nice after dinner drink. Unsurprisingly it is strongly reminiscent of a white desert wine, say a late harvest chardonnay or muscat. Luxurious and relaxing, if not terribly complex or challenging.
