The Balvenie Portwood 21 Year Old

Review by: MP
Color: Bronze
Nose: slightly peaty, oak wood, fresh honey.
Body: Full bodied, but smooth. creamy
Palate: almond nuts, fresh cream, slight peat. Slight sourness, but lots of floral aromas.
Finish: A pleasant moderate finish. warm.

This whisky is excellent, very smooth, and great with portwood finish, hint of sweetness, but the Doublewood 12 years is slightly better - tastier and gives a wider variety of floral scents.

The Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year Old

Color: Copper
Nose: slightly peaty, honey, and fruits. Let it sit with some water for a few minutes and take in the scent of toffee. Hint of sherry.
Body: Moderate body. oily
Palate: woody, flowers. hint of almond nuts. hint of liquorice.
Finish: Long finish, balanced.

This one needs water, once added you have a pleasant toffee scent, honey and fruits. A slight liquorice taste. Quite sweet, well balanced. This one is fantastic, and felt better than the 21 year old Portwood. I'm very impressed with this whisky, it's one of the best!

The Glenlivet 16 Year Old Nadurra

Review by: MP
Color: pale gold
Nose: oak, citrus, flowers
Body: full bodied, the bourbon casks seem to impart a strong flavour, almost overpowering
Finish: medium finish that initially hints of oak, but ends with floral and citrus flavours

It seems like a very heavy whisky, sweet and smooth, and rather good with a few drops of water (as I drank it on the second tasting). Without the drops of water, this would be a 75. But this is delicious and easily an 85.

Glen Moray Classic

Review by: MP
Color: Very Pale Gold
Nose: Oak, Peat smoke but very astringent to the nose. Quite floral.
Body: Medium body, light
Palate: Reminds me of a blended whisky EDIT: a very good blended whisky at that.
Finish: Long finish, warm, but quite flat and boring. EDIT: Not flat... but balanced. Not boring, just not as interesting and alternating in taste.

Boring whisky - worse than anything I've tried yet. Lacks character and balance. The only thing that this whisky has going for it is the floral notes when one sniffs at it for the first time. I would rather have a blended whisky for 1/2 the price. EDIT: This is actually quite a nice whisky ... I prematurely gave it a 51. But after comparing it side by side to Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich 12 ... it seems a better whisky ... perhaps by a very fine line. The floral aroma dominates this whisky, yet the taste seems balanced, but not interesting.

Color: Copper
Nose: Peat, Oak, Strong Floral.
Body: Full bodied
Palate: Sugar, Peach, Oak, Peat.
Finish: Very long finish, strong till the end with alternating flavours of peach, oak and flowers.

Fruity, Oak, Sweet and Floral. This is a perfectly balanced whisky in my opinion. Great to sniff and smooth and oily to drink.

The Glenlivet Nadurra 16 Year Old (06 2006)

Review by: MP
Color: Pale Gold
Nose: Oak, Citrus, Floral
Body: Full bodied. Bourbon cask emparts a very strong flavour, almost overpowering.
Finish: medium finish, with strong oak at first, and later hints of floral and citrus.

This bottling is 47% abv. Although this is a smooth whisky, I don't see it as a everyday drink - for that I would choose the Glenlivet 12 which is lighter and more fruity. Those who like Bourbon may enjoy this 16 year old bottling, as the bourbon casks used really show through when tasting.

Glenfiddich Special Reserve 12 Years Old

Review by: MP
Color: Light amber
Nose: Fresh Water. Fruits.
Body: Light bodied
Palate: Peach, Plum, Fresh water.
Finish: A long finish, light to the end. Hot.

A friend offered this whisky for me to try, he keeps it as his daily stuff. But I found it too light, although fruity, smoother than some, but a real burning sensation. It wasn't much to drink, kind of felt like I was drinking water even though I hadn't even started adding water in at all. This is probably one of the worst whisky's I've had. It isn't worth trying, yet it doesn't taste awful. Advice: just stick to water instead!

The Macallan 12 Years Old

Review by: MP
Color: Very dark gold, bronze-ish
Nose: Orange, Peach, Roses
Body: Full bodied
Palate: Walnuts, Peach, Flowers, Apples, Oranges.
Finish: Medium finish, smooth end. Cool.

One of the best i've had. Goes down extremely smooth, lacks the long finish, however, very cooling, and rarely hot. Well worth the price of $90/bottle. Floral and fruity are the definitive characteristics of this whisky.
