I've long been lamenting the unfortunate trend of distillers watering down their whisky. At a point where all the others, great and small, chose to water down their product from 43% to 40%, there was in the end only one shining star remaining: Haig & Haig with Pinch (AKA Dimple). Today I went to buy a bottle of Pinch and noticed, to my great dismay, that now, it too, has been watered down to 40%. This is a very, very sad day for those of us who used to enjoy a good blended scotch. I lament that it is no longer possible to procure a good blended scotch in the USA. Needless to say, I did not buy the bottle of Pinch, but returned it to the shelf, feeling heartbroken. I said it was a "trend," but in reality, it is a conspiracy. My opinion is that the principals involved in the production of all blended scotch whiskies belong in prison for this collective travesty. Fortunately, at the moment, at least, there remain a few malts that retain their integrity. The big names, e.g., Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, etc., already sold out long ago. The question that haunts me now is, will the malt distillers follow suit? Or will they stand up and do the right thing?
