Knob creek is what bourbon is supposed to be warm and strong, just complex enough

- Nose
- This one wakes up your nose and screams "bourbon". Heavy on the oak and leather.
- Body
- Probably among the fullest bodies out there. Thick, almost caramel-like.
- Palate
- Roasted maple, leather and caramel balanced with light notes of cinnamon.
- Finish
- A long, strong finish. Nicely warms the heart.
This is a whisky best appreciated by a seasoned bourbon drinker. One to be savored. Don't you dare mix it.

Can't much more about it really other than although difficult to find int he Montreal area (only due to the increased patronage to the stuff locally) it maintains a constant presence in my bar. My favorite "storebrand" whiskey. It's high proof and reminds you as such, with alcohol a dominant present in the nose and throat upon first sip. Once you settle in though, it gets comforting, warm and a bit woody. It makes its brothers in the JD line taste like pale, sour imitations of real whiskey, but it doesn't really try too hard to be anything special. You can still taste a bit of that JD/JB "sourness" (I call it) in the mix. JD is bottom shelf whiskey at middleshelf price. Knob Creek knows its place and aims a little higher. An excellent stock whiskey for drinking neat, if you don't mind a little burn.

while jw blue is indeed a fine blended whiskey, relative to the scores i've seen on many other fine, equally smooth, and altogether more distinctive whiskeys on this site, it scores too high. so in an attempt to even things out a bit, i'm trying to adjust the average. seriously, look at some of the other scores of the fine whiskeys. the best average you'll tend to see is around 85; while jw blue is nice, it's a big homogeneous and indistinctive, worthy of no higher a score than the average earned by many other fine whiskeys on this site.

I actually have two bottles of Finlaggan - one of them is the 40% "Old Reserve", which is unabashedly and unmistakably Lagavulin. The silliness about the "most secret distillery" is all utter rubbish. There is no mystery, other than its age. Compared to the standard 16-year bottling of Lagavulin, I'd guess this at ~12-14 years, since it doesn't quite have the same richness or length of finish. Now the other bottle I have truly _is_ a mystery. It's a cask strength (56%) bottling, which is both (a) unrecognisable, and (b) undrinkable. It is horrible, HORRIBLE stuff--not just poor or bland, but aggressively unpleasant, unbalanced, and just plain nasty. Everyone who has tried it agrees--we'd rather be drinking cheap rye than this cask bottling. If 50 is the lowest score, than that's what this would get. However, it galls me to assign a value of 50 to this stuff. AVOID!

I have been drinking Bourbon since the age of fifteen, that is to say, for fifty-one years. I was introduced to Rebel Yell in 1985 when I was encouraged by business associates who noticed my penchant for Bourbon, to buy some in The South while on vacation. When I returned North, I found a distributor who would sell it to a local liquor store. It is now more commonly found. Rebel Yell is the drinking man's Bourbon for those who savor the flavor. If you want panache, buy something written up in The New Yorker Magazine and flatter yourself. If you enjoy your liquor, and I do not mean alcoholism, buy Rebel Yell. It mixes well for cocktails that are enhanced by additives, not overpowered. People who drink sissified drinks taste my 80 proof Rebel Yell and think that it is much stronger. This Bourbon is just plain old "GOOD."

I found this to be highly overrated. Most flavors are meek, and the strong sherry just ruins it for me. I don't like it when my whiskey tastes like wine.

A lot of nice flavors without being overpowering. A nice intro to Islay, that won't explode your face like a Laphroaig. Happily for me, does not have the nasty taste of sherry like Macallan.

- Light smoke almost matched by alcohol.
- Body
- Thicker end of medium. Sliky.
- Palate
- Sipped this gives a wondrous mellow wave of smokey peat. This makes me think of proper oak smoked salmon. A larger slip opens the taste to the smoke of burning embers of wood. A cooling leaves a slight medicinal tint to the peaty taste. The larger the sip the more brutal the impact of the alcohol. Overall a balanced taste with a slight sweetness initially quickly before balancing out nicely.
- Finish
- Warming and the flavours of smokey peat linger. The mouth dries over time giving a drier taste. Transitions to an oily taste/texture towards the very end. The aroma lingers longer than the actual taste.
If I was to compare this as a red wine - between Cheval Blanc and supermarket plonk this would come in at about £25/bottle. A single dimensional taste rather than presenting a layered palette of taste however a good clarity of that taste delivered in silk if tasted by sipping.

My favorite of a all the highlands and for special guests. The fine oak finish now incorporates aging in three barrels: sherry-trreated European and American Oaks treated with sherry, an American Oak treated with bourbon. The "treated with" feels wierd, but the result is terrific!

- Nose
- Nose is sweet and earthy. Smells like a peat bog on a cool but very humid summer night, with some trees on fire.
- Body
- Medium, a little oily. Not as thick as other ten year olds.
- Palate
- This whisky has a strong alcohol flavor that is truly numbing on the tongue and lips. Despite this, strong smoky peat flavor comes through. It also tastes like fire. This whisky burns with the fire of a thousand suns. The flavor is brutish and surprising - kind of a slap in the face. Tastes like medicine, too, as a result of these characteristics.
- Finish
- Intense and long. Breathe out through your nose and there is a distinct burn and tingle that raises the hair on the back of your neck. Kinda feels like your head is full of fire, but it's not burning you. After this, a sweetness that is exactly like the smell of old musty wood furniture can be enjoyed for several minutes.
If you want to get into Islay, don't start with this. I've had Laphroaig's 10, 15, and Quarter Cask (Laphroaig 10 is my favorite whisky so far). The character of Ardbeg 10 is not elegant, complex, and rich like Laphroaig 10, but is rather belligerent, reckless, and hyperactive. Comparing these two whiskies is kind of like comparing Athens and Sparta. This whisky, while very enjoyable, is not quite my cup of tea. However, if you want a whisky that spits in your face and insults your character while screaming obscenities in your ear, Ardbeg 10 is for you.

I do not know about the fruitiness or hint of raisin or any of that stuff. I have been a bourbon drinker for over 35 years. I have been drinking Rebel Yell for as long. It is as good as any bourbon there is and it is the brand I look for. I really feel the bad reviews are by people who are influenced by price. If you are paying more for Beam, Daniels ( I know not a true bourbon, but close enough, Kentucky Whiskey), or Makers Mark you may be paying too much. It used to be only available in the south, it was that exclusive in the 70's-80's. This is so smooth I turned a non-drinker into a bourbon drinker. Jack couldn't do that nor Beam...no way. . It is all a matter of taste said the farmer's wife when she kissed the cow. This is not as tasty as Wild Turkey or Knob Creek...but it is close and an excellent bourbon, whatever the price.

I drink Irish & US whiskies mostly. I don't prefer the smoky scotch but I can appreciate it done well. This isn't it. It has a lot of flavor but the aroma is off in a big way.

- As it should smell! Syrupy, a hint of vanilla and some oak. Very inviting.
- Body
- Very thin, almost like old water. It feels like it evaporates too quickly or that its some kind of mixed drink. The body seriously dissapoints.
- Palate
- Very good start, with some faint whiff of iodine, then some caramel and lastly the vinalla comes down. Eventually it all fades and really doenst satisfy.
- Finish
- Leaves a numb feeling in the mouth, almost like it has bad alcohol in it, or that it has been added later (not implying anything here). It stays for a long time, but its not a pleasant feeling. It lacks warmth.
A mediocre single malt, just bought this and when i opened the cardbord cover it was very promising, since it has a dark color and I have had only pleasant memories of the more amber looking whiskies. BUt eventually it dissapoints, it even left a bitter taste in my mouth. Not really what you would excpect from Aberlour. And certainly not from a 10 year old single malt.

I find it laughable how Caol Ila rates so highly among testers yet this vatted, which is I believe mostly Caol Ila, gets dubious remarks..Perhaps the vatting with other malt(s) compromises the anticipated instead of marrying successfully? Not a bad intro for beginners to Islay characteristics. REVIEWER FROM CLAREMONT,ONTARIO,CANADA

- Body
- Medium to light in body, a bit warm but not hot in feel. (We used a few drops of filtered water with it)
- Palate
- A wonderful, light whiskey with enough complexity to interest one. Roasted malt and light new wood flavor. Residual hard candy sweetness that went well with the fruity notes and faint smoke / tar.
- Finish
- Moderate lingering finish. Not particularly complex. Some herbal notes, maybe green hay or leaves?
Another surprisingly good offering for the price. At under $20 US you will absolutely not go wrong with this or the Speyside. Real regional character at blend price.

- Finish
- Moderate finish, certainly not up to the best of breed, but quite good for a five year old. Light on the wood but a definite touch of vanilla at the end.
You will be surprised how good this is at under $20 US a bottle, especially if you taste it blind against almost any ten year old. EXCELLENT value for everyday drinking, even if you save something exceptional on the shelf for guests.

A real classic at a good price point. This is one to keep, if you can resist the temptation. To me Laphroiag is the glorious epitome of character in malts and this is a more refined version of the essential parts of this distillary's output. Of course there are better but not at this price...

This is a single malt that is for the budget drinker. I can appreciate a nice Lagavulin every now and then (and even keep some at hand), some Laphroigh a little more often, and a good Talisker as well. However, those can all break the bank in a hurry. This is a good "house malt" if you will... and it also benefit greatly from just a bit of water.

There are many good scotches on the market. This is one of them. J & B is an old contender and maybe because of that it has lost some popularity, but in my opinion, it's a darn good blend. Especially for the price. It has a pretty good nose, it's pretty smooth and has a good taste about it. It finishes well and it's a good quality liquor. I like to drink my scotch with ice and J & B takes to ice very well, which means that it has some depth and character. It's my everyday scotch.

It has the aromas of the balvenie, the colour of the macallan, the subtlety of the bunnahabhain, the finish of the auchentoshan, the taste of the aberlour.....taking only the best bits, a well balanced whisky, a winner. One for companionship, and to share with your best mates.

I think this is a fine, every day single malt whiskey. I simply can't afford to drink Laphroaig or Lagavulin all the time, at $70+ a bottle. However, I can enjoy McClellands at $24 a bottle locally. You make some concessions, but you still have a nice, Bowmore-style Islay single-malt to drink.
