Laphroaig Quarter Cask takes its inspiration from the small casks often used for Scotch Whisky in the 19th century and frequently transported across the Glens by packhorse.

- Color
- Golden amber.
- Nose
- Heavy peat, smooth smoke, too much complexity to describe here. The nose discerns so much more than words can convey.
- Body
- Medium to slightly thick. Just perfect.
- Palate
- Smokey peaty sexiness. Spicy fruitiness in the background but like the smell the taste is so much more than I can adequately describe here. Just amazing stuff.
- Finish
- Long but not so long as you don't want to keep sipping away to reinvigorate your tongue.
The King of all Whiskeys. Period. Utterly intense, complex and beguiling. Smokey and peaty but also sweetly alluring. On the nose it's scent is heavenly. And to top it all off its very affordable when you consider it's grand status. Like the distilled tears of angels. Sublime.

- Color
- light amber
- Nose
- Jalapeno pepper, white pepper, black pepper, beat, burnt leaves.
- Body
- Medium-full bodied at a wonderful 48% ABV.
- Palate
- If poured from a new opened bottle, lots of fresh hot peppers, and spice, once it opens up after about 10 minutes, smoked lobster that has been baking in the sun appears. Sea sides arise all around, smoke covers everything. Tastes simply like wonderful spiced Chinese sea food. It's a very savory complex taste. One to be remembered and at a decent price when compared to Ardbegs and Lagavulins in this quality range.
- Finish
- Everything you would expect from a high end Islya malt, but more complex at a young age.
A wonderful whisky. This has your classic laphroaig peat explosion but with time in the glass, immense complexity at a young age emerges. Was very impressed. An Islya to be recon with. Costs about $58.99 plus tax where I live in the US. WORTH IT! Can't go wrong here.

- Nose
- Maritime, damp seabreeze, kippers, smoke from the forest, a hint of rubber? or could be wooden ash. The strong alcohol jets straight up your nose suggesting the need for a drop of water.
- Body
- Thick, sticks to your gullet like napalm,
- Palate
- From the smell of this I thought immediately that I wouldnt like this coming from the sweeter less challenging speysides, however upon tasting I was pleasantly surprised how it went from a pleasant sweetness all the way through to a firey pepper and smoke that lifts itself up to the top of your mouth like it has a life of its own, very exiting experience. Not for the faint hearted. The hint of rubber is curbed just before it bothers you. Much improved with water IMO to open up the subtle smokiness and reduce the rubber. Definately one that wakes you up.
- Finish
- Long and satisfying. Lingers playing games with your tastebuds and smell, telling a hundred stories of its origins long after its gone.

Released in 2004, this bottling was aged for five years before being finished in a quarter cask for seven months, the size of the cask is quite small, thus does not require such a long maturation. This is truly a great achievement from Laphroaig.

- Color
- not too pale straw
- Nose
- slightly reminiscent of laphroaig 10. Sea, smoky peat, sweet, slightly flowery, vanilla, hint of finished wood in there. not quite as peaty as expected. water opened up a bit more vanilla/ light sweetness.
- Body
- neat- not too much depth, seems to be quite hard, solid. water- softens like a thick but light quilt, still retains a faint underlying hardness.
- Palate
- quite unique to me, definitely some pepper, woody, peaty, a little salty and smoky. iodine is there, vanilla sweet comes through in soft waves, a wonderful feeling in the mouth. that pepper is always there though. i like it. the transition between neat and watered is quite linear, it seems to shift the balance perfectly from hard to soft, releasing that sweeter taste more without affecting the original flavours.
- Finish
- very long. very very long. starts warm, overlays sweetness, then a little woody/smoky peat followed by a lingering taste of the sea, this bit just like the laphroaig 10 but sweeter, more 'fragrant' tasting.
First whisky review. might make more. though perhaps i need to stop smoking.

- Unwatered : Sharply salty! Iodine, with some smoke. Watered : More iodine, 1950s hospital, but peatier and woodier underneath. Reminds me of a foggy night in the country in Ireland, where turf is burned as fuel.
- Body
- Wet, but not too oily
- Palate
- Burning turf (peat), more iodinic than Ardbeg but not so much as Talisker. A little sweeter when watered - aged toffee/sweets perhaps?
- Finish
- Watered : Burning turf smoke (peat), warm in the chest with aged wood. Iodine is there, but lesser than the palate & nose. Saltier, less 'muted' finish when neat.
Sharp nose unwatered, very salty - with water it mellows. Finish is very salty neat, and smokier/muted when watered. Unsure of which I like best! Two whiskys...one bottle!

When I was a kid we lived in the country. One of my jobs was to burn our garbage in a pit. One day my father shot a groundhog and told me to burn the body in the pit. It took several attempts and after a week or so the smell of that carcass was exactly like this whisky - and that, oddly enough, is not a bad thing.

- Body
- Sultry, with a sheer set of legs
- Palate
- Sea salty with an all-out affront of hospital iodine; the slightest hint of malty brown sugar sweetness gives way to brutally intense white oak, followed by a seemingly microsecond confluence of every single olfaction thus far...
- Finish
- Ringing finish which quakes your gut and sends you spinning in a centrifuge where your insides are out and you're punch-drunk - even prior to the onset of the second finish. That's right - while you regain balance from the first K/O on shaky foundation, you are embraced, warm and familiar; it’s like you've been saved from the bowels of Hell by Divinity; comfort envelops you as you wallow in it's warm afterglow...
All I can say is, HolyShitte, this is everything you expect from Laphroig and anything you ever were left longing for after the standard 10 year. Head and shoulders above it's more popular version, which ain't no slouch itself. I'm still reeling. This just entered my top 5 whisky's of all time.

Wow. This a peat monster. I love Islay single malts and this is on the top of my list. I'm sure there are more layers of flavor in it but they get over powered by the intense peat/smoke/wood taste. Very delicious. Laphroaig rules! It saddens me a little bit because all my other favorites (Ardbeg 10, Uigeadail, Lagavulin 16, Talisker 10) just pales against it as far as intensity is concerned.

Amazing! The first time I poured it into a glass, I was reminded of a box of bandaids. It gradually levelled off to smokiness. Matter of fact, there was a huge fire at a building down the street yesterday. I likened the smell in the air to a whiff of Laphroaig! When this settles down in the glass, I cannot imagine a smoother, more refined whisky. It just blows me away, how something that smells at times like a dirty ashtray, can be so satisfying. I have tried a few single malts, but nothing comes close to this. When I roll it around in my mouth, I feel like I am in Heaven! For a malt with such an intense beginning, the palate and finish are each a paradox!I could do on and on about the marvels of this single malt. Magical! Marvelous! Miraculous!

- Color
- Gold/Light Amber.
- Nose
- Familiar cooked fruit, smoke is more subtle than other Laphroaigs, leaning more toward ashy charcoal.
- Body
- Medium-full bodied, medium oily on the tongue.
- Palate
- Saliva-inducing fruit and smoke, though a bit weighted towards the smoke, high ABV prickle and outright numbing if you roll it around too long.
- Finish
- Youthful attack, quite long for what seems to be 8 to 9 years smooth, old bitter oak comes through later with a dry afterbreath.
A Laphroaig with attitude to satisfy Murray's cast of everything-Ardbeg. What was always a live campfire promised by Laphroaig has moved to an ashy afterburn. Excellent indeed, but the balance promised by the nose fails to overcome the smoky dominance, leaving this just short of classic.

- Oh, how vibrant. Good iodine and oak. Breathe closer and find earth and forest. Water it and find yourself getting lost in some beautiful citrus notes.
- Body
- Stormy, full bodied and weighty.
- Palate
- Big earth, with prominent peat and oak just lurking underneath, supported by the littlest hint of sweet malt. I have always thought of this one as campfire-like.
- Finish
- Ridiculously long, this campfire was built to last. Great peat and smoke with a touch of honey. The earth that comes with is just amazing.
Watered down or not, this is simply amazing. A perfect chord, with perfect balance, unique taste, and an endless finish. Can't be missed.

- smoke, peat, malt grain, salt, iodine
- Body
- full bodied; medium-strong.
- Palate
- tastes like the sea. There is smoky peatiness present, but not as present as in the normal Laphroaig. Malty-sweet undertones
- Finish
- long, even, warm finish, Nicely balanced
This one certainly IS a keeper. Surprisingly smooth and mature tasting for such a relatively young whisky.

- Color
- wheat field
- Nose
- phenolic but lighter than standard laphroaig
- Body
- smooth and quite heavy in texture, the cask strength giving it considerable length of texture
- Palate
- Reminiscient of beached seaweed. Iodine precariously but perfectly balanced by the high strength alcohol.
- Finish
- a slight warmth in the finish but the phenol and iodine lingers. Very long finish.
A real classic at a good price point. This is one to keep, if you can resist the temptation. To me Laphroiag is the glorious epitome of character in malts and this is a more refined version of the essential parts of this distillary's output. Of course there are better but not at this price...

This is whisky that will fight you and WIN. Not for the casual whisk(e)y sampler, Laphroaig is definitely for the mature palate. Once you've lost a few rounds to it though, you begin to appreciate the complex flavous more.
