For those who love big, rich, peaty and smoky malt whiskies, this is your whisky. Bottled at 46%, 'The Peat Monster' combines extremely smoky malt whisky from Islay with medium-peated Highland whiskies to create a balanced and approachable monster, but a monster nonetheless.

- Color
- Pale straw.
- Nose
- Floral notes, some tropical fruit, gentle peat and smoke, warm apple cider, young vegetables.
- Body
- Light to medium, crisp.
- Palate
- Well-integrated malt and peat. Wonderful balance, slightly on the sweet side but with a touch of spice.
- Finish
- Very warm, long and dry. Spice and fruit fade away first, followed by longer lasting smoke; faint seaweed lingers on.
Apparently there has been more than one version of PM; I purchased my bottle in early 2010 in Ontario, Canada. A happy marriage where the sum is bigger than the parts, bottled the way it should be, this is a robust, finely balanced dram of great development and complexity. It takes water well - worth experimenting. A few drops reveal a lighter floral bouquet; there is so much more here than just peat. It really needs time, however. Magnificent whisky in modest no-nonsence presentation.

I could sit around and sniff this all day, but drinking it is a different story. It was okay, but NOT worth the price! I LOVE peat whiskys and this one definately had enough peat...but not much else. The finish was less than desirable.

- Burnt paet with a hint of sweet malt
- Body
- Light with some oily viscosity
- Palate
- Strong peat flavor with a little sweetness.

- Burnt peat
These guys messed up some perfectly good Islay whisky by blending it with other crap. Very one dimensional, and points are deducted for being overpriced!

- Color
- No caramel,non chill-filtered Hoorah!,clear straw
- Nose
- smoke,slight citrus
- Body
- Although I prefer oily malts generally, I find this light bodied and easy-drinking offering quite nice.
- Palate
- smoke, touch of salt, vanilla in background along with hint of citrus tang
- Finish
- Short finish with slightest sour note.
I find it laughable how Caol Ila rates so highly among testers yet this vatted, which is I believe mostly Caol Ila, gets dubious remarks..Perhaps the vatting with other malt(s) compromises the anticipated instead of marrying successfully? Not a bad intro for beginners to Islay characteristics. REVIEWER FROM CLAREMONT,ONTARIO,CANADA

For being advertised as a Peat Monster, this is certainly disappointing in that catagory. If you want strong peatiness,go with Lagavulin or Laphroaig. This pale in comparison

- Color
- Very pale yellow, with floaties.
- Nose
- Peat smoke. A hint of malt.
- Body
- Light and thin.
- Palate
- Peat smoke.
- Finish
- Lingering peat smoke.
This is exactly as they describe on the box. Lots of peat, but mellow like a highland. There is no complexity here. Just peat. It lacks the character of a single. There's nothing bad about it, but there sure isn't much good either.
