Established in 1779, Bowmore Distillery is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and nestles on the shores of Loch Indaal on the Inner Hebridean Isle of Islay. Bowmore is universally regarded as the best balanced of all the Islay malts, as characterised by its wonderfully rich and complex flavours.

- Color
- Red amber.
- Nose
- Unfortunately, some sulphur masks the winey, smokey sardines/kippers, and leathery nutmeg spice. Water introduces violet/lavender.
- Body
- Full and oily (legs confirm). I am tempted to light a bit on fire since it sits like lamp oil on the tongue.
- Palate
- Confirms the nose and adds that famous Bowmore salty iodine that I love (but some don't).
- Finish
- Very long and hot, but smooth and forgiving (even at 51.5% ABV). Dry and a little bitter.
This used to be my favorite of the Bowmore wine cask finishes, but I'm not so sure now - I've really had to downgrade it on periodic revisitation. I can detect a bit of sulphur, which masks all the other things I love that the regular Bowmore 12 delivers.
