Auchentoshan Three Wood
Review by John Peter
- Color
- Amber/Deep Caramel
- Nose
- An overwhelming essence of butterscotch and toffee, very light on the peat.
- Body
- A very smooth, more viscous scotch with thick legs that slowly trickle down the glass.
- Palate
- Just before the peat kicks in, your tastebuds are teased with tastes of orange and chocolate, but even when the peat hits you, it's more like a gentle push, rather than the harsh slap of other single malts. It also goes down easily.
- Finish
- When the peat wears off, your tongue is caressed with a gentle, but unmistakeable nuttiness, mixed with a subtle hint of grass.
A very nice single malt. Definitely one of my favorites. The fact that the Auchentoshan single malts are triple distilled is very clear in how smooth they are, particularly with the Three Wood. In other single malts that I've tasted, the bite of the peat and alcohol is very overwhelming, but the Auchentoshan is different. I would recommend the Three Wood to anyone who wants a complex, yet smooth scotch.
